“Never trust anyone who has not brought a book with them.” For us, this sage advice from Lemony Snicket extends to everything we do, including birthday parties. The party doesn’t start until the books arrive. If you’re looking to add a bookish element to a birthday --a decision we couldn’t agree with more --we’ve got the perfect suggestions.
#1 For an out of this world party, definitely include this book: If You Had Your Birthday Party on the Moon. Written by Joyce Lapin and illustrated by Simona Ceccarelli, this book is filled with lots of fun and fascinating science facts. Do you know what would happen to your cake and candles on the moon? Rocket inside this book to find out. (Recommended for ages 7-10)
#2 Have you ever tried to find the perfect gift for your friend’s birthday, especially the friend that already has everything? It is hard to do! That’s the dilemma facing Squirrel in The Best Birthday Present Ever. This story, written and illustrated by the talented Ben Mantle, memorably depicts y feelings of true friendship and meaningful gift giving. (Recommended for ages 3-6)
#3 Do you get just as excited on the night before your birthday as you do on the night before Christmas or another favorite holiday? In The Night Before My Birthday, we see all the careful preparations leading up to the big day of partying. But what if something were to go wrong? Could you be sure that the fun isn’t spoiled? Check out this beautifully rhymed story by Natasha Wing with lovely pictures by Amy Wummer to see how everyone deals with a mishap to still have the birthday of the year. (Recommend for ages 3-6)
#4 For our younger crowd, we love recommending Sandra Boynton’s Happy Birthday, Little Pookie. This darling story shows all the excitement you would expect of children on their birthday: from waking up early to looking forward to fun activities and little surprises. (Recommended for ages 1-5)
#5 Since Little Duck has never had a birthday, he isn’t sure what to expect or how to prepare. So he mimics everything his friends are doing to get ready for the party. Discover the fun that ensues in Click, Clack, Surprise, part of the beloved Click, Clack series by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin. This is a fun book for children celebrating their first birthday or for older kids who will understand the humorous things Duck does. (Recommended for ages 4-8)
#6 Last but not least, Bernice Gets Carried Away is a great story about how to handle life when it isn’t going our way. This little cat doesn’t get the perfect piece of cake or the coldest soda at the party, and life seems sad and gloomy. See what helps her turn things around in this great book by Hannah Harrison. (Recommended for ages 4-8)
