6 Healthy Birthday Cake Recipes For Your Family

Whether you want your little ones to hold off on sugar or try something new for this year’s party, here are six healthy alternatives to your regular sugary birthday cakes. Don’t worry, they taste just as delicious while providing health benefits that make your child’s birthday a wholesome one.

1. Smash Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting

A trendy way to celebrate your child’s first birthday is doing a smash cake photoshoot. If you don’t want your one-year-old to try out artificial sugar yet, here’s a healthy alternative for you -- a cake made with fruits and cream cheese frosting.

Ingredients you need: 

  1. 4 or 5 ripe bananas
  2. 3/4 cup applesauce with no sugar added 
  3. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  4. 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  5. 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  6. 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  7. 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  8. 1 cup (8 ounces) cream cheese
  9. 1/2 cup (4 ounces) apple juice concentrate with no sugar added 
  10. 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

First, mash the bananas in a bowl. Then mix the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in another bowl. Add the mashed bananas, applesauce, and vanilla to the flour mixture and mix them together again. After that, use a nonstick cooking spray to spray two 8 or 9’’ round pans. Then spread the batter onto the bottom of both pans. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes.

Cool the cakes, then take them out. You can stack them on top of each other. 

As for the frosting, soften the cream cheese and whisk it with the apple juice concentrate and vanilla extract until it becomes creamy. Put it over the cakes and enjoy.

2. Fruit Cake

A fruit cake is perfect for a summer birthday, and the kids will just love this little fruit castle. It’s fresh and wholesome, and you don’t even have to turn on your oven. 

Ingredients you need:

  1. A watermelon 
  2. A cantaloupe 
  3. Two kiwis 
  4. Grapes
  5. strawberries 

You can cut the watermelon in half and peel it. Do the same to the cantaloupe. Use a cookie cutter to cut the kiwis in the shape you want. Stack the watermelon and cantaloupe on top of each other. You can put some kiwis between their edges. Then put some strawberries on top to decorate it or place some grapes at the bottom. Remember to cut the grapes in half for your little ones.

3. Greek Yogurt Cake

This Greek yogurt cake is low-carb and gluten-free, perfect for your health-conscious family. It is made with almond flour and stevia, and the cake tastes like a pound cake, besides being incredibly soft. 

Ingredients you need: 

  1. Eggs
  2. Greek yogurt
  3. Sweetener (I use stevia)
  4. Vanilla extract
  5. Salt
  6. Almond flour
  7. Baking soda

4. Chocolate Cake With Almond, Hazelnut, and Orange

We all know the worst is the white sugar. This chocolate cake is just sweet enough to make your little ones happy while only containing a bit of brown sugar, which is a lot healthier than other sweeteners. 

Ingredients you need:

  1. 1 cup almond meal
  2. 1 cup hazelnut meal
  3. 1 cup plain flour
  4. 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  5. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  6. zest of one orange 
  7. 2 tsp baking powder
  8. 6 large free-range eggs
  9. 1 tsp natural vanilla extract
  10. 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  11. 1 cup organic, fat-free, plain yoghurt
  12. 1/4 orange, juiced
  13. 100g dark (70%) chocolate, roughly chopped

5. Mango, Peach and Chocolate Sorbet Layer Cake

Let’s get excited, this cake is vegan and gluten-free. And the ice cream will keep you and your children cool during the summer. We’re sure that this tasty frozen treat will be an amazing addition to your summer party. 

Ingredients you need: 

  1. Mango Sorbet
  2. 3 medium mangoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  3. 150ml (2/3 cup) water
  4. 130g (1/2 cup) sugar
  5. juice of 1 medium lime
  6. 2 tablespoons gin or white rum

#6: Double Chocolate Cupcakes

It’s time for some cupcakes, which are delicious snacks for any occasion, whether it’s your child’s birthday or a kids’ party during holidays. They’re also sugar-free and Paleo friendly. 

Ingredients you need:

  1. 2 Tablespoons of cacao
  2. 2 Tablespoons of coconut flour
  3. 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  4. 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  5. 2 eggs
  6. 2 Tablespoons of maple syrup
  7. 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  8. 1 teaspoon of coconut oil, melted and cooled
  9. a pinch of salt flakes
  10. 2 Tablespoons of roughly chopped dark chocolate + extra for drizzling.
