For our little bookworms out there, nothing is more fitting than a book themed birthday party! Not only will it be a dream come true for the kids, but it will also make a refreshing and fun birthday party idea. In this blog post, we will introduce step-by-step how to plan and prepare a book party for the birthday star with some easy  DIY decoration ideas. As I am sure each kid has different preferences in books, here we will take the Pinkalicious book as an example, a book about a girl named Pinkalicious Pinkerton and her brother Peter who both love the color pink, but most tips apply for any children’s book parties.

1. Pick Your Kid’s Favorite Picture Book

There might be many books that you read to your kids, but for the purpose of throwing a party, it would be more practical to present all the picture books to your kids as choices. And to take Pinkalicious books as an example, a lot of party elements are already embedded in the book itself - a signature color scheme, easy-to-make props and designated party food.

2. Decorate the Party According to the Book’s Color Scheme and Content

There is no doubt that the table set-up directly reflects the theme of the party. Here, we have identified pink and white to be the color palette, which is applied to the table cloth, plates, cups and even the straws themselves. Remember, it is always the small details that give away how committed you are to the book theme. When it comes to table displays, try to find replicas of objects that are central to the plot. For instance, cupcake displays are perfect decorations to create that Pinkalicious mood for kids!

Like many children’s books, Pinkalicious features signature props for the main character, such as the tiara and magic wand. While it is not hard to find a similar princess crown and magic wand set online, the book’s props can also be a great opportunity for some arts and crafts! Kids will always appreciate their own customized props and some quality bonding time with their parents. For example, kids can decorate their own a tiara and crown.

3. Read or Enact the Book as Party Activities

Classic party games like doughnuts on a string or musical statues are certainly fun, but as long as you are throwing a book themed birthday party, what could be more important than engaging the kids in the story? For a simple and easy activity, introduce “storytelling time” into the party, where guests are able to immerse themselves completely in the story. For something that is more active and engaging, you can rehearse with your kids before the party to enact a few scenes from the story!

4. Prepare Book Themed Party Food

Many may wonder what counts as party food for a book party, but there is absolutely no need to stress out about it. A simple way to turn any food into book themed is with some mini graphic cupcake toppers. For instance, cupcake toppers picks with images of book stacks are perfect for the occasion, and they can also be reused for any book parties in the future. In addition, don’t forget to look for inspiration for party food in the book itself. When it comes to books like Pinkalicious or The Watermelon Seed, having cupcakes or watermelon slices at the party is a must. But there is no need to despair if your child’s favorite book doesn’t have a clear connection to food. A creative way to solve this dilemma is to prepare plain cupcakes or cookies and let the kids decorate them according to the book theme.

5. Make Sure the Goodie Bags Are Relevant to the Book

We have come to the last step of the party - the goodie bags! We always want to leave our guests with something that not only reminds them of the party but are also practical. First and foremost, the book that inspired the party theme is a great choice for the guests. Parents will have one more book to read to their kids before bed, and the kids may be encouraged to take up reading as a new hobby. In addition, a toy or an art project that is related to the theme will be widely appreciated. At last, when it comes to a book party, canvas book bags that the children decorate according to theme will also make a cute option.
